Check it out. I have made a bean pie. It's actually surprisingly easy, and there are plenty of recipes on the internet. I was a little surprised by that fact--Biffle and I both thought that the bean pie was some odd food that Wali's Fish Supreme invented, but in fact it's a pretty common food for folks who belong to the Nation of Islam. According to Wikipedia (an authoritative enough source for a blog post, if not for real research), "Elijah Muhammed encouraged their consumption in lieu of richer foods associated with African American cuisine." I think a bean pie is plenty rich, though.
And a word of advice: do not eat any bean pie in front of Maybelle unless you want to share.
And here's a final bit of food-related fun for a Wednesday morning. We fed Maybelle beets long ago, but we never returned to them--until this morning. It turns out she loves them. How good an idea is it to feed beets to a baby who throws up all the time? We'll find out.

Beets are my nephew Rowen's favorite food. Gets so excited about them. And messy. So very, very, messy. http://www.flickr.com/photos/crafty_bear/3805995514/
I think it is a fabulous idea to feed her beets, because that picture is utterly delightful. It is also delightful watching my cats try to figure out what is going on when I watch videos of Maybelle saying "yaaay!"
I love it! Now I have someone else in the family who will eat beets with me. Until now, I've either had to buy the individual serving size can or put half in a Tupperware for another meal, as no one since Grandma Hall has been willing to eat them. The photos of her eating them are adorable.

This is just like that "gas, grass, or ass" bumper sticker--how do you not know these things? Bean pies are so ubiquitously associated with NoI that they, along with bow ties and copies of Final Call, are practically synonymous with the movement.
Well, Conseula, yet again I am outed as being a white person. And a clueless white person at that. I really had no idea that bean pies were such a staple of the NoI (nor have I ever before seen the acronym NoI).
Thank you for being the only commenter so far to actually have something to say about the bean pie of which I am so proud!
what do you get if you remove the middle of your bean pie?
I can appreciate that you are proud of your bean pie but am completely distracted by the picture of that FACE - look at her! SO. DARN. CUTE.
would you share your recipe? or maybe just make another one when we are around.... :) the pies you make are always good (like at thanksgiving).
I got my recipe at http://www.muhammadspeaks.com/Pie.html.

ahem. to quote aaron "bean pie hole". my guess was bean hole which i thought was much funnier.
You've inspired me to try to make one of these! Also, man what a cute picture of Maybelle--that is quite the grin!
